This is the game that rebuilt the franchise. After a run of entries that lost their edge, the 2011 reboot stripped things back to what made Mortal Kombat work in the first place: 2D fighting, brutal finishers, a roster that actually feels distinct fighter to fighter. It worked. Critics called it a return to form. Players agreed.

The story mode is the centerpiece. Raiden gets visions of Earthrealm’s defeat and sends a message back through time, trying to change the outcome. That premise lets the game rewrite events from the original trilogy. Shao Kahn’s invasion plays out differently. Character deaths that felt permanent get undone or replaced. It’s fan service, but it’s smart fan service, built for people who know the lore and want to see it bent.

The roster’s stacked. 28 characters, from mainstays like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Liu Kang to guest fighters that shouldn’t work together but do: Freddy Krueger, Kratos, even Skarlet as a fan-created addition that made it into canon. Each character has a distinct move set. Nobody’s a reskin.

Combat runs on a stripped-down system that rewards footsies and punishes button-mashing. Special moves, combo strings, and a super meter that fuels enhanced attacks and X-Ray moves. X-Rays are the signature addition here: hit the meter at the right moment and the camera cuts inside your opponent’s body, showing bones snap and organs rupture in slow motion mid-combo. It’s grotesque. It’s also one of the most memorable additions the series ever made.

Fatalities are back too, and meaner than past entries. Multiple finishers per character, plus Babalities and Stage Fatalities for variety. Test Your Might and Test Your Luck return from the classic era, alongside a full suite of unlockables and challenge towers for players who want more than versus mode.

This build (08072014) is the PC version, patched and stable, running the full Komplete package exactly as intended: every DLC character, every costume pack, every mode unlocked from the start.
