Project Castaway drops you in the middle of the Pacific after your plane goes down, washed up on the nearest island with a survival guide and not much else. From there, it’s on you: hunt, gather, craft, build, and figure out how to stay alive somewhere that owes you nothing.
The island setup pulls from the genre’s usual suspects (Stranded Deep, Raft) but pushes further on presentation than most of them bother to. Water that’s actually clear. Sand that catches light the way sand should. Storms that roll in with real weight behind them, thunder cracking overhead while you scramble for cover under palm trees. It’s the kind of game that sells you on the fantasy of being stuck somewhere beautiful before it reminds you why that’s a problem.
Survival here runs on the usual pillars: hunger, thirst, shelter, health. But Project Castaway layers a psychological system on top that a lot of survival games skip. Time alone on the island wears on your character’s mind. Left unchecked, that isolation tips into something closer to madness, and it changes how you play, not just how you feel. It’s a small addition that makes the solitude actually mean something instead of just being scenery.
You’re not locked to one island. Once you’ve got the resources, you can build a raft or boat and start pushing out across open water, hopping between islands that each bring their own materials, hazards, and reasons to keep exploring. Sunken ships, submerged wrecks, the occasional oddity poking out of the seabed. There’s always a reason for one more trip before heading back to base.
That base-building loop sits at the center of the whole experience. Gather wood and stone, craft basic tools, then work your way up to proper shelter and defenses as your gear improves. It’s a familiar rhythm if you’ve played survival games before, but the pacing here stays approachable without feeling shallow.

Bring friends along and the whole dynamic shifts: split resource runs, divide base-building duties, or just let chaos happen when someone forgets to watch the fire at night. Co-op turns a solitary survival story into something closer to a shared expedition.
